Top Bauxite Mining Companies in the World

The top ten bauxite producing countries account for about 95% of the global bauxite output. Australia, Guinea and China are some of the most dominant countries in bauxite mine production, generating 110 million, 82 million, and 60 million metric tons of bauxite, respectively, in 2020, followed by Brazil, India, and Jamaica. The forecast for world bauxite production in 2020 is estimated at 367 million metric tonnes. About 85% of the bauxite produced in the world is converted into aluminium because of its various industrial uses. The Huntly mine in Australia is one of the largest producers of bauxite in the world; it is owned by Alcoa World Alumina. Company wise the top bauxite mining companies based on their mining reserve and current capacity and production in the world are:

It is to be noted that most of the world’s largest bauxite mines are co-owned by multiple companies. The top bauxite mining companies have ownership / operating rights in bauxite mines in the top bauxite producing countries.

  1. ALCOA (Alcoa Worldwide Alumina and Chemicals (AWAC)

    Alcoa Corporation (a portmanteau of Aluminum Company of America) is an American industrial corporation. It is the world's eighth largest producer of aluminum with corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Alcoa conducts operations in 10 countries. Alcoa is a major producer of primary aluminium, fabricated aluminium, and alumina combined, through its active and growing participation in all major aspects of the industry: technology, mining, refining, smelting, fabricating, and recycling.

  2. RIO TINTO

    Rio Tinto Group is an Anglo-Australian multinational and the world's second largest metals and mining corporation, behind BHP, producing iron ore, copper, diamonds, gold and uranium. The company was founded in 1873, when a multinational consortium of investors purchased a mine complex on the Rio Tinto, in Huelva, Spain, from the Spanish government. Since then, the company has grown through a long series of mergers and acquisitions to place itself among the world leaders in the production of many commodities, including aluminium, iron ore, copper, uranium, and diamonds. Rio Tinto also has significant operations in refining, particularly for refining bauxite and iron ore.

  3. HYDRO

    Norsk Hydro ASA (often referred to as just Hydro) is a Norwegian aluminium and renewable energy company, headquartered in Oslo. It is one of the largest aluminium companies worldwide. It has operations in some 50 countries around the world and is active on all continents. The Norwegian state owns 34.3% of the company through the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries.

  4. THE ALUMINIUM CORPORATION OF CHINA

    Aluminium Corporation of China Limited, is a Chinese company listed in Hong Kong and in New York. A multinational aluminium company, its headquarters are in Beijing, People's Republic of China. It is the world's second-largest alumina producer and third-largest primary aluminium producer (and the largest producer in China).

  5. COMPAGNIE DES BAUXITES DE GUINEA (CBG)

    The Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG) is a Guinean company in the mining sector. Since 1963, it has exploited the important Sangarédi bauxite deposit, in the Boké region, in Guinea. Guinea is the 5th world producer of bauxite, but the country has the largest reserves of ore, the estimated amount to 25 billion tons, or half the world's reserves.

Apart from these top 5, some other companies are Rusal from Russia, EGA from middle east, Nalco, Vedanta and Hindalco from India.
