Description

High alumina cement, also known as calcium aluminate cement (CAC) or refractory cement, is a type of hydraulic binder that is manufactured by grinding alumina (Al2O3) and limestone (CaCO3) together and then firing the mixture at a high temperature. It has a high alumina content, typically ranging from 40% to 80%, which gives it excellent heat resistance and refractory properties.

Here are some key characteristics and uses of high alumina cement:

High heat resistance: High alumina cement can withstand very high temperatures, making it suitable for applications where exposure to extreme heat is involved. It has a low refractory temperature, typically around 1500-1600°C (2732-2912°F), which allows it to be used in high-temperature environments.

Rapid hardening: High alumina cement sets and hardens quickly, allowing for faster construction or repair work. It achieves its initial strength within 24 hours, which makes it beneficial for time-sensitive projects.

High compressive strength: High alumina cement exhibits excellent compressive strength, providing structural stability to refractory linings and other applications. It can withstand heavy loads and mechanical stresses.

Chemical resistance: High alumina cement has good resistance to chemical attack from various substances, including acids and alkalis. It is less prone to deterioration and corrosion in harsh chemical environments.

Refractory applications: High alumina cement is widely used in the manufacturing of refractory concrete, refractory castables, and refractory mortars. It is employed for lining furnaces, kilns, incinerators, and other high-temperature equipment where thermal insulation and resistance to thermal shock are required.

Speciality applications: High alumina cement finds applications beyond refractory use. It is used in construction for rapid setting and early strength development, as well as in the oil and gas industry for well cementing in high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.
